Glory (1989) Movie Review for this Epic Historical Civil War Movie About the First African-American Regiment in the Union Army

Introduction/ Plot Synopsis:

The movie Glory (1989), is a historical  war drama based upon the true story of Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, a white Union  army officer (played by Matthew Broderick) ,  and his attempt to raise the first African-American regiment to fight in the United State’s Civil War.  Glory explores the trials and tribulations of such an unlikely accomplishment by Colonel Shaw in 1860′s America, which includes the racism and prejudice of his own Union compatriots.  Glory also tells the poignant story of the African -Americans who volunteered, and died, for the 54th Massachusetts (two of whom are played by Denzel Washington &amp Morgan Freeman)   and their fight against prejudice,  desire to prove themselves in battle, and to fight for what they rightfully considered their country too.

Good quality Entertainment with Superb Acting and Cinematography:

Glory is quality entertainment for general movie goers (its final battle scene of the 54th Massachusetts’s assault on Fort Wagner is phenomenal) and specifically for history and Civil War buffs. Denzel Washington won the Academy Award for very best supporting actor for his function in Glory, and the movie also won the Academy Award for best cinematography.

An Superb Tool in Any Lesson Plan About the Civil War, African American History, and/or Racism in America:

Besides becoming just fantastic entertainment for all, Glory’s potential for use by professors and educators as a “stand alone” learning tool or as component of bigger lesson strategy on topics such as African -American History, the Civil War, racism, and prejudice in America, is limitless.  In today’s age of IPods and video games, showing students a gripping historical war drama with known stars such as Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman, and Matthew Broderick, is a lot more likely to capture student’s interest than a textbook or lecture.  Once the student’s interest is peaked, the teacher’s lesson strategy is sure to have far more of an impact and lasting impression.  Of course age appropriateness must be considered as Glory is rated R (under 17 calls for accompanying guardian).

Glory’s running time is 118 minutes.
