Movie Review: Breaking News (2004)
<p>Since Anders Banke, director of the Swedish vampire hit FROSTBITE (aka FROSTBITTEN), has directed a Russian remake known as NEWSMAKERS (2009), why not have a look at the Hong Kong original?</p>
<p> In the middle of the 2004 Cannes Festival, BREAKING NEWS (Daai si gin) was suddenly thrown into the official choice – albeit out of competition. Positive, it was fairly cool to suddenly find a Hong Kong actioner in that section, especially considering that I got to see it in the huge Grand Lumière theater. But following having noticed it, I wondered how the hell this movie ended up finding selected for this prestigious section.</p>
<p> When it comes to director Johnnie To, you by no means know what you get. At times he makes highly entertaining, instant classics like HEROIC TRIO (1993), whilst he sometimes makes completely uninteresting movies. BREAKING NEWS ends up somewhere just below an average To flick.</p>
<p> Cops are chasing a gang of bank robbers and locate them in a large apartment creating. In some type of attempt to criticize or possibly parody today’s media climate, the pursuit of the robbers is aired live on Television like a reality show – but the satire disappears amongst all the gunfire and weird, silly comedy. There certain is a lot of action. The film opens with a completely extraordinary gunfight in a street à la HEAT, it’s a very lengthy scene without any cuts instead the steadicam just floats around the men and women involved in the shoot-out, and it need to have taken an eternity to stage this. Guns are fired each now and then all through the movie, and positive, it is well done and nicely choreographed, but it gets tiring and uinteresting. At times a guy shows up and farts.</p>
<p> It is possible I’d feel the film was greater had I watched it on DVD at home even though eating low-cost candy. But I didn’t. I saw it at Cannes. And I expected much more from Johnnie To.</p>
